QUESTION: There are a lot of nonprofits in our area vying for the same donors and dollars. How can we set ourselves apart?

First, remember that the most cost-effective fundraising is to retain your existing donors and build loyalty. And a great way to build loyalty is through regular communication. Make sure not every communication is money-related. Periodically, share success stories without asking for a gift - not even a soft ask. Consider sending your most loyal and long-standing donors, as well as all your large-gift donors, a handwritten note from time to time. Personal phone calls are another easy and inexpensive way to set you apart from other nonprofits vying for attention. The average donor supports four or more organizations in a big way. To ensure your council stays near the top of the list, consider how you can communicate with donors outside of the ask.
