A Scout is Thrifty

Thrifty: Managing money and resources in a cautious and sensible way, wasting as little as possible; thriving; growing vigorously.

Being thrifty does not mean doing without. It means making every decision count. Whether it is being intentional with finances or being a good steward of time and tangible possessions, being thrifty is about saying "no" when it is needful, so you can say "yes" when it is beneficial.

Decades of Growing Philanthropy for Nonprofits and Boy Scouts of America
Hartsook is the premier consulting firm leader in advancing fundraising education and applied fundraising research with investments in excess of $28 million. On April 1, 1987, when Hartsook began our ascension as a national leader in growing philanthropy, we were a small, ambitious voice among many uninspiring commentators. Today, we have grown into an international company and have helped our clients raise well over $230 billion. We have earned, developed, and built our role and our leadership in the consulting fundraising profession. Find out what Hartsook can do for your council, email [email protected].

$231 Billion Raised: New from Hartsook Founder and Chairman Bob Hartsook with CEO Matt Beem

Ask Hartsook!
Do you have a tough fundraising question?
Send your questions to [email protected] and we will respond by email. Your question may be featured in a future eHartsook on Scouting.

QUESTION: We know we're a great organization with a life-impacting mission, but feel like we need to be uncovering new donors and we're not sure what's the best way to do it. Any ideas?

Of course, everyone in the world should care about your organization! After all, you're doing great work. Yet, uncovering new donors is always a challenge. Ask yourself: "Who shares the organization's interest? Who is or has been connected to the cause?" Don't forget current and past board members, other volunteers and extended members of Scouting families; "Who has already demonstrated a modest interest? Could we increase their interest by inviting them to participate in a signature event?"; "Who has expertise your organization could use?" Some people feel more connected when they are giving - more than when they are receiving. Rather than feeding them dinner and making an ask, ask them - in their expert opinion - about a project the organization is considering. Get their feedback. As we always say at Hartsook, "Involvement leads to investment."

- Hartsook Senior Executive Vice President Karin Cox is a frequent speaker at regional and national conferences and events. In his youth, her son, Austin, participated in Boy Scouts of America.

Strategies for Success: Cast a Wider Net
Organizations often miss out on grants because they take a narrow view of their mission and meaningful work. Don't miss out on potential funding. Think big. Expand your horizons and cast a wider net. Hartsook Executive Vice President Norma Murphy shares tips for casting a wider net when researching potential grants and gifts to your nonprofit. Go here to read more.
