Ask Hartsook!

Do you have a tough fundraising question?
Send your questions to [email protected] and we will respond by email. Your question may be featured in a future eHartsook on Scouting.

QUESTION: Is there a way we can help donors increase their level of giving when we know they are passionate about a particular funding goal?

Individuals who invest in the mission of your organization with a gift want to make a big impact, and there are several ways you can help them do just that. One is through giving multi-year gifts rather than making an annual pledge. Donors with other financial assets such as appreciated stocks, mutual funds, real estate or other options many times can make a much larger gift by donating those assets rather than writing a check. Finally, don't be afraid to ask your donors if they have considered including your organization in their estate plans. If you are not included in their legacy plans, it does not mean they don't want to support you; many times, they have just never been asked.

Book Deal of the Month

In Nobody Wants to Give Money Away! (ASR Media), Hartsook Chair Bob Hartsook, details his nine principles for raising major gifts, starting with, "Nobody wants to give away money." Prior to joining Hartsook, Executive Vice President Stephen Jones served as the Presiding Bishop/Chief Financial Officer for the Community of Christ where he oversaw development and implementation of a five-year strategic financial plan and was responsible for overseeing $1 billion of insured assets worldwide. In his fundraising capacity he helped secure over $65 million in capital and endowment gifts and pledges and realized the campaign's largest single of $20 million. Steve has also served as the Chief Operations Officer for North Iowa Mercy Hospital Center and was Senior Vice President for Regional Health Network for ten hospitals and shared services. He has a Master of Arts/Religion, Park University; Master of Health Administration, St. Louis University; and a Bachelor of Science, Augustana College.

Strategies for Success: No Margin, No Mission
Too often, nonprofits that really need more funding "right now" may have a harder time raising money than those that have funding available for their current needs and some margin for the unexpected. Whenever an organization raises money out of its need, it could be perceived as a way of saying clients are not receiving all the services they should or at the highest level possible. When there is no financial margin, fundraising becomes the mission, and that is never what you want. Go here to read more.
