The Power of Personal Communication

imageDo you remember the last time you received a handwritten note? Nowadays personal notes are so rare, they almost feel like antiques. Receiving a handwritten card or letter is so unexpected that it tends to get people's attention. This is why taking the time to send personal notes to donors is so important. Here are some things you might want to include in a handwritten note to your donors:

Share something about your organization
Did you recently host an event that was reported on in the local paper? Do you have a success story from a community member who has been helped by your services? Share these with donors. Enclose pictures and newspaper clippings when possible to let the donor see the impact their gift is making.

Congratulate donors on achievements
If your donor wins an award, is promoted, or elected to an office, make sure you send your congratulations. This shows the donor that you are interested in their success, not just your own. A relationship is a two-way street.

Say thank you
You can never over-appreciate your donors. Send a card just to say, "Thank you," whether it's for attending an event, for a specific gift, or even just for their ongoing interest in your organization. Think of something personal to include, such as a compliment on their dress, their dance skills or their generosity.

Donors like to know what is going on and how their gift is making a difference in the lives of those you serve. If they only hear from you when you want money, they probably won't be donors very long. Use the power of personal communication to show you care about them and appreciate their support. This will make them want to be around for a long time and the size of their gifts will increase.
